Christopher Heide is the author of almost three dozen professionally produced
plays for stage, radio and television a number of which appear in print. Heide’s
work has been produced by a wide variety of theatres from coast to coast to
coast, in most Canadian provinces as well as in the UK. He has taught writing
and playwriting at four Atlantic universities and has been invited to speak at
numerous Canadian, British and European universities.
A past Artistic Director of the Mulgrave Road Co-op and the Chester Playhouse,
Heide is currently Director of Mermaid Youtheatre and Artistic Director for the
2010 Liverpool International Theatre Festival.
With Mulgrave Road he won the Canadian Literacy Volunteer Award and the Canadian
Business and the Arts Award. With Mermaid Youtheatre, which he founded in 1990,
he was honoured with the Gordon Foundation’s Award for Children and Youth in
2005 and last November chosen National Ambassador for Safety Community Service
for his recent theatre project on teen suicide. He has also been the recipient
of numerous arts grants including a one-year residency in Edinburgh through the
Canada Council & Scottish Arts Council.
Heide divides his time between Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia and Pangnirtung, Nunavut,
which he describes as his “home and home-way-from-home” respectively.
